The Lee College of Engineering at UNC Charlotte is a national leader in academic and research programs related to the many elements energy production, distribution, and markets. The Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC) at UNC Charlotte is a collaborative, multidisciplinary enterprise within the William States Lee College of Engineering that is uniting the academic and research expertise of the university with the great wealth of energy engineering talent in the Charlotte, North Carolina, region. The center has a three-part mission: workforce education, research and testing, economic development.
Originally focused on growth and advancement in the mainstream energy engineering industry, EPIC is expanding its integral connection to and support from the numerous companies of Charlotte energy hub to include transportation energy, starting with the rail transportation industry. EPIC educational programs at the undergraduate and graduate level emphasize the application of engineering skills on energy challenges, now including the interconnection between energy and transportation.
